Analysis of documentary posters

This poster straight away outlines what it wants its viewers to believe, the concept of a person being born a killer, how an innocent child can already be corrupt and ready to carry out their future crimes even with ought knowing what the future holds. This narrative is very narrow minded and only seems to focus on how someone is born that way, not shaped or abused that way. The tittle making a murderer suggests it almost in a light hearted way like making a cake, like there are steps and ingredients needed to make the perfect killer. The torn picture of the inmate as a young boy can signify his loss of innocence and loss of who he was before committing his crimes like if he had ripped himself in half leaving the norm in the past of his childhood and slowly descending into what eventually would be his downfall. The close up shot of his mugshot and the innocent childhood picture can make the audience feel a sense of sadness seeing side by side the reality of some peoples lives. It might also make the audience wonder how truly a child can grow up to end up murdering someone, what roads they go down and if they chose it out of some sick want or if there were other factors at play. The mans face in the mugshot isn't showing much emotion, he doesn't seem to regret it or be devastated by his sentence or that his proud of it, more like his indifferent about his sentence and doesn't truly care about what he did. The lighting in both pictures is a artificial one for what looks to be a maybe a school picture and one for his mugshot, yet neither look happy,  you'd think for a poster like this with a title of making a murderer they would use a happy childhood picture instead of one that's so restricting as a school portrait but maybe he didn't have any happy childhood photos or the poster is trying to paint a broader narrative and push that this man was never content and the only childhood photo he has is him sat for a school photo. The background shows that he's been caught and convicted for his crime and wont be out harming others again. Lastly, this is a close up shot, no high or low angles so its almost as if we are being treated as equals to this man which could emphasize the idea that the documentary wants us to really understand how his mind works.

For this poster the narrative is very different we have a women smiling while being dubbed the queen of the serial killers, this show that not only does she not care about what she did and is honestly proud of herself but there are people, fans even who believe she is the ultimate serial killer for what she may have done and hold her to a high regard feeding into her ego. the lighting being grey could suggest her life is void of colour and joy or that a person like her never had it to begin with, if someone is being labelled a queen of serial killers then her life before her crimes was definitely not a happy and calm one. in the background we cant make out a lot but she doesn't seem to be surrounded by other people and it looks like she's in a run down place, maybe prison or maybe that was her home. The text with her name Aileen is in red while the rest of the text is in white, this signifies how her name isn't pure and neither is she, with the crimes and sins she's committed she isn't held in a favourable light anymore. Additionally, there isn't really a high to low angle used to take her photo which could imply that  the documentary wants us to see her as an equal and empathise and understand her actions and what led her to this point. however this photo is more of a medium close up, like a photo taken by a friend, this intensifies feelings of alienation and ostracizations the poster wants us to feel towards this women. this reflects the cruel nature of her actions and the horror of such crimes against humanity. also worth noting the colour scheme is very greyscale, its like the colours have been sucked out of the photo emphasises feelings of dehumanisation and horror as all life is being sucked out of the picture just like she did to her victims.
