Popularity of TV Documentaries
The world-wide expansion of streaming services has allowed
for the rise of tv documentaries, every major studio like Disney and paramount
have a streaming service allowing their fans and watchers to only consume their
media whether its movies or tv series or documentaries. This has left a lot of
audiences stuck to their favourite streaming services and franchise, leaving the
major studios in need of constant eye catching and entertaining content of
every kind to draw in more views and expand their views pallet. From 2018 to
2021, documentary demand has grown substantially by 142%, making them the fastest
growing genre on streaming services, and that number is constantly increasing
and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Many theorise that the growing in demand
of documentaries started during the pandemic, when people were stuck indoors
and with so much time many began watching documentaries learning different cultures,
opinions, real life stories even wildlife and nature. This newfound content
mine left views wanting more genuine, non-fictional content to make them feel
more connected to the outside world and those around them. Additionally, not every
documentary is made by a big studio most are made and published by views on
sites like YouTube, allowing views to discuss with others what they really
thing, unfiltered reality of certain topics and share unscripted opinions
making documentaries feel realer and connect people further. It also helps that
documenters can be about anything from something mainstream to something niche,
educational topics or anything and anything that viewers want. That’s why documentaries
have such a broad audience both in age and social stand because documentaries
can also be as broad. For example, true crime and criminal documentaries will
statistically appeal to white women around ages 25-45, whist documentaries
about history and war tend to appeal to a male dominated audience of men around
their 30s and over.
History of TV Documentaries

minute-long moments were captures of film like a train entering a station or a
factory worker leaving work, simple small stories that views would see or experience
daily. They were also used for commercial or work-related reasons, like being
used to correct professional errors and training, these were called travelogue
films (between 1900-1920s). biographical documentaries also appeared during this
time., such as the feature of Eminescu-Veronica-Creangă
- Enciclopedia României - prima enciclopedie online despre România on the
relation between the writers Mihai Eminercu, Veronica Micle and Ion Creanga. These
short films were called, actualities and later ion 1926 turned documentaries.
